BEACH & GARDENS

Tropical gardens and beach

The house is surrounded by several acres of colourful tropical gardens and is just a few steps away from Takaungu’s wonderful and often deserted white-sand beach. There is excellent swimming and the snorkelling is great just off the reef at low tide. The “cool pool” at the southern end of the beach is a safe place to swim or wallow at low tide. The rag coral caves and rock pools are other great places for children to explore.
Tropical gardens
When we came here many years ago, there was dense low bush  crowding up to the ruins of the house, we started by clearing and planting whatever we could get to grow in the harsh salt laden air. The topsoil was almost non-existent and we chipped holes in the bare coral to give the first plants a chance to grow. Time is a wonderful gardener and despite many failures we managed to expand and nurture and plant trees to give us shady spaces. Every year it gets a little better and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
The grounds
The houses, which are our family home, sprawl across the space and are organic in their design to give us space. Paths join the areas to protect the grass in the dry season and make moving between the houses easier and are lit at night with solar lights.
Beach
'What is life... but the hunt for the perfect beach' ... Mohamed tells us that nothing is perfect and the beach has many different moods and shapes created by the monsoons that proves this point. The sands shift and reveal different facets but always give us lovely swimming and a multitude of pools and crevices to explore. We instigated a movement to protect our beach from the onslaught of seabourn pollution and have managed to keep it almost pristine. The turtles which used to nest here do so again and we endeavour to keep both our beach and the village of Takaungu clean and free from litter.
