A Zanzibari style, substantial, three-storey house

Like the next door Private House, Takaungu House began life as a single-storey cottage but has grown over the years into a delightful and substantial 3-storey building, designed and built in a traditional Zanzibari style, with generous rooms, high ceilings and breezy outside spaces.

Downstairs is a large and airy veranda along with an elegant and spacious drawing room and dining room with Moorish arches.

Accommodation at Takaungu House

The top floor Suite, all 2000 sq ft of it, has surely got to be one of the "coolest" bedrooms on the coast. A huge double bed shrouded in mosquito net, an ensuite and rather open air ensuite bathroom, a morning veranda with an occasional Arab bed as spare.

The middle floor has two double bedrooms with their own bathrooms, a private veranda and a big open terrace area for relaxing or occasionally 'al fresco' dining under the stars.

The downstairs has a further twin bed guest room en suite.

Immediately beside the house is a palm thatched cottage with a pair of spare rooms (one double and one twin) and bathroom, originally a granny flat; it now provides perfect space for a visiting couple with or without children.

Total 8-10 plus some children.

In this troubled world where humanity seems to have lost its way Takaungu House is a reminder that beauty and kindness still exist. This is the second time we have been here and it truly felt like coming home.
